In noaptea de 5/6 decembrie se spune ca Mos Nicolae vine la geamuri si vede copiii care dorm si sint cuminti, lasindu-le in ghete dulciuri si alte daruri, insa tot el este acela care-i pedepseste pe cei lenesi si neascultatori. In dimineata de Sf. Nicolae, copiii cuminti gasesc daruri in ghetute. E un obicei vechi, nu numai la romani, de a face cadouri in aceasta zi. Spre deosebire de Mos Craciun, Mos Nicolae nu se arata niciodata. De altfel, povestea darurilor impartite pe furis in aceasta noapte incepe din vechime.
Se spune ca insusi Sfintul Nicolae a ajutat trei sarmane fete din orasul sau, aducindu-le dar de zestre, noaptea, fara a fi vazut. Casa in care traiau cele trei surori era mai mult decit saraca. Tatal lor planuia sa-si vinda fetele, crezind ca astfel se va chivernisi. Plinsetele si rugamintile fiicelor sale nu l-au induplecat pe batrinul cu suflet negru. Sfintul Nicolae a aflat despre nenorocirea ce se petrecea nu departe de locuinta sa. Noaptea, pe furis, el a aruncat o punga plina cu galbeni in camera fetei celei mai mari. Astfel ea a reusit sa se marite curind. La fel a facut Mosul si in urmatorii doi ani, iar sora cea mijlocie si apoi cea mica au reusit sa se aseze la casele lor. De atunci si pina in zilele noastre, in fiecare noapte a Sfintului Nicolae, cei dragi noua, si in special copiii, primesc daruri, de la Mosul care nu li se arata niciodata. Cine e Mos Nicolae? Cunoscut in Transilvania si sub numele de Sin-Nicoara, Sfintul Nicolae este cel mai popular sfint in Ardeal. Sarbatoarea lui a generat un adevarat folclor, de la darurile de Mos Neculai si pina la obiceiurile si legendele diferentiate de la sat la sat. Nascut in cetatea Patara din tinutul Lichiei, din Asia, Sf. Nicolae (in limba greaca biruitor de popor ) s-a dovedit de timpuriu alesul Domnului, uimind de mic copil prin minunile pe care le facea. Dupa ce i-au murit parintii, Nicolae si-a impartit averea saracilor si a intemeiat manastirea Sionului de linga Mira, capitala Lichiei, calatorind ca prelat la Ierusalim.
